I decided to write this because no matter how obvious having a specific niche is to people that have been around the internet for a while. I still see it time and time again, where people run a forum about everything, or a blog with articles anywhere from the stock market to the recipes from mom’s special dish.
Picking a niche, whether you are blogging, dropshipping or even running a forum is one of the most important things when it comes to success and failure. This is one of the most crucial criteria to success on the internet for the average internet user. I’ve seen it too many times, when beginners try their luck on the internet and don’t even a niche. It’s basically guaranteed failure!
Why average internet users? Simply because average internet users like you and I just do not have the resources, both in resources and man power to operate a vague site. If you are Walmart or Amazon then maybe you can power a site that sites basically everything. But if you just the average Joe with dropshipping business and you don’t have a topic for your little online retail store; I’m sorry your business is probably going go down the drains.
Not only does targeting a niche allow you to attract a certain group of people that will be interested in a series of your articles on your blog, or a series of your products you’re selling; but it also gives you a better chance of differing from major competitors and in the end building a memorable name for your site.
The Importance of having a niche always remains me of this quote from Sun Tzu’s Art of War:
“For should the enemy strengthen his van,
he will weaken his rear; should he strengthen his rear,
he will weaken his van; should he strengthen his left,
he will weaken his right; should he strengthen his right,
he will weaken his left. If he sends reinforcements everywhere,
he will everywhere be weak.”
Although, the quote is not referring to niches in businesses but it shares a very important view on both online business and war. That is the allocation of resources.
Because your not like Walmart, and have a very limited amount of resources. You will not be able to operate a site about everything, or at least effectively enough to competitor with the other internet superstore giants out there. For example, you are running a dropshipping store, which requires you to add products to your storefront. You don’t have the time to list a million products or anything near that. Therefore, it is much better to have a store devoted to targeting a specific group of people. For example learning games and supplies for little kids.

The point is that almost every time, in all cases, you will have to be targeting specific niche to have a shot at making it a success. If you don’t you’ve already failed before you started, so be sure to include ample of time into figuring out your target niche in your plan before you make that move. Usually, the more specific your niche is the better. However, you must be careful to balance how specific your niche is going to be with how much content or products you will be able to deliver with that amount of space. If you find that you can’t produce enough content for that specific niche, well then either change that or look elsewhere.
